Shillaber Grand Opening
Moose Mountains Regional Greenways is excited to announce the permanent conservation of the 195-acre Shillaber Property in Farmington and Strafford, NH. This ecologically significant land protects critical wildlife habitat and wetlands within the Berry River watershed—an important drinking water source for Rochester—and offers public access to two miles of trails for low-impact recreation. The project was made possible through strong partnerships, public support, and grants from LCHIP and the Drinking Water and Groundwater Trust Fund.
We invite you to join us for the grand opening celebration of the Shillaber Property—come explore the trails, learn about the conservation efforts, and enjoy this beautiful new public space.

Leary Field & Forest Clean-Up
Join us at Leary Field & Forest in Farmington, NH for a light day of trail clean-up! We’ll be focusing mostly on clearing branches and brush, making this an easy-paced workday that’s great for all skill levels. Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes, and remember to bring water, snacks, and a lunch if you’d like. If you have hand tools such as loppers, feel free to bring them along!

Guided Fungi Walk with NHMS Experienced Foragers & Milton Conservation Commission
Guided Fungi Walk at Casey Road Conservation Area
Join the NH Mycological Society (NHMS), the Milton Conservation Commission, and Moose Mountains Regional Greenways on Saturday, October 4, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM for a Guided Fungi Walk at Casey Road Conservation Land in Milton, NH.
Three NHMS Board members, and experienced mushroom foragers, Meaghan Winders, Colleen Brown Bellows, and Caitlin Costello, will share their expertise and enthusiasm for all things fungi. Each forager will lead a group of 10–15 participants into the woods to collect both edible and non-edible mushrooms, along with other types of fungi. After the walk, the collected specimens will be displayed on tables for observation and educational discussion.
This event is free, but space is limited to 40 participants, and advance registration is required. Kids are welcome! Registered participants will receive a confirmation email with details about parking, what to bring, and information regarding a possible postponement due to inclement weather.
The rain date is Sunday, October 5. 🐾 No pets, please.

Forestry in a Changing Climate
Join forester Dan Stepanauskas on a walk in the woods to discuss a range of forestry topics:
-Wildlife habitats, pollinators, birds of prey, and predator populations.
-The soil’s influence on forest ecology.
-The threats of climate change and invasive species.
-How forest species will migrate northward.
-How a forester can use assisted migration to hasten natural selection.
-How to determine which trees to grow where in the forest.
Long pants, long sleeves, boots, and natural bug spray are recommended. We will spend a large portion of the workshop walking along woodland terrain.
Directions to the event will be sent to registered participants.

Charles C. Norman Munroe Preserve Fall Clean Up

Join us for a stewardship day at the Charles C. Norman Munroe Preserve in Ossipee, NH! Volunteers will help with moderate trail maintenance along the River Trail and may assist with updating signage on the Boundary Trail. Please wear sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing, and bring water, snacks, and a lunch if you’d like. If you have hand tools such as loppers, feel free to bring them along!

Conservation 101 for Landowners – Middleton
Join Land Agent Veronica Bodge for an engaging presentation designed for landowners interested in exploring land conservation. Veronica will cover the fundamentals of conservation and conservation easements, offering helpful insights and guidance. There will be plenty of time for questions, so attendees are encouraged to bring their curiosity!

Property Walk with Tom Eid
Take a guided walk through the newly protected Hraba Forest in Wakefield, NH, led by Tom Eid of Tom Hikes NE. This 132-acre conservation area near Lovell Lake features over 1.5 miles of trails, rich biodiversity, and historic remnants including an old family cemetery and foundation. Discover its ecological significance while learning how preserving this landscape helps safeguard the pristine waters of Lovell Lake.

Join us at Teneriffe Mountain Forest in Milton, NH for a day of trail clean-up! We’ll focus on clearing branches and brush to keep the trails open and welcoming, as well as some stream maintenance. Please wear sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing, and don’t forget to bring water, snacks, and a lunch if you’d like. If you have hand tools such as loppers, you’re welcome to bring those along too.

Improving Stream Habitat: Understanding Woody Additions
Join foresters Charlie Moreno and George Main, along with Kelly Boland from NRCS, for a walk in the Branch Hill Farm woods to see firsthand how strategically adding tree trunks to streams can enhance habitat, improve water quality, mitigate flood risk, and prevent erosion.
Do you care for a stream on your property? This workshop will offer insights and resources for applying these strategies at home.
Long pants, long sleeves, boots, and natural bug spray are recommended. We will spend a large portion of the workshop walking along woodland terrain.
We will gather at the woodland access road near the corner of Mason Rd and Teneriffe Rd in Milton, NH. Exact location and parking instructions will be shared after registration.
Registration is limited to 15 participants.
This workshop occurs during hunting season, so please wear ORANGE! We will have some extra orange vests to lend.

MMRG Annual Meeting 2025
🌿 Come together for Moose Mountains Regional Greenways’ 2025 Annual Meeting!
Come together for our yearly celebration, united by a commitment to conserving the land and its resources. Connect with fellow locals who share a deep appreciation for the beauty and value of our natural surroundings.
This special evening will be held at Trenta Restaurant in Wolfeboro, NH, beginning with a cocktail hour followed by a catered dinner, and the presentation of MMRG’s annual awards.
Our keynote speaker, Dr. Lee Alexander, Research Professor Emeritus at UNH and longtime land steward, will share insights from a landmark Yale Forest Service study on New England forest landowner attitudes and practices. His talk will explore how those findings remain relevant today and connect directly to MMRG’s mission of land conservation, stewardship, and fostering a true “land ethic” toward the wildlife and forests in our region.

Hawk Watch with Scott Weidensaul
Join the Milton Conservation Commission and Moose Mountains Regional Greenways on Saturday, September 20, from 9 to noon, for a Hawk Watch with renowned ornithologist and best-selling nature writer Scott Weidensaul. Scott will share his deep expertise with participants as well as his experiences from over 40 years of working with birds in the field across the globe.
This popular annual event will have a new location this year – on private conservation land on Teneriffe Mountain in Milton. This site has excellent visibility to the north to watch for migrating hawks and to enjoy the view of Mount Washington on a clear day. A five-minute moderately steep walk to the viewing site will be required, as will the patience to wait for raptors to fly over. It is a good idea to bring a portable chair, snack and water, hat and bug spray, sunscreen, and definitely binoculars; a few extra pairs may be available.
This event is free to all but is limited to fifteen participants and advance registration is required; click here to register. The event may be postponed to the same time on the following day, Sunday, Sept 21, if the tailwinds for migration look better or to avoid inclement weather.

Migrating Birds & Wildlife Habitat Plants
Join Extension’s Wildlife Habitat Specialist Matt Tarr and Moose Mountains Regional Greenways, Land Agent Veronica Bodge for a slow walk through the beautiful Leary Field & Forest where we will look for migrating songbirds and discuss things you can do on your land to attract and benefit a variety of wildlife. During our walk we will spend some time identifying different tree and shrub species and will discuss how different plants function as habitat for birds and other wildlife. Bring your binoculars!
Cost: $15 per person. Registration is required, space is limited.
This fee is non-refundable unless the program is cancelled due to poor weather.

Forest Management Walk with Tim Nolin
Join us at at Teneriffe Mountain Forest!!
Moose Mountains Regional Greenways (MMRG), Partnering with Milton Conservation Commission, invites you to join us for a guided hike at Teneriffe Mountain Forest in Milton, NH, as part of our ongoing efforts to connect people with sustainable land stewardship.
The hike will be led by professional forester Tim Nolin, who will highlight and discuss the recent timber stand improvement (TSI) work he completed on the property. Throughout the walk, Tim will explain the goals behind the TSI practices, the specific methods he employed, and how these actions support both the ecological integrity and long-term productivity of the forest. This program offers participants the chance to see forest management in action and learn how responsible forestry can benefit both people and nature.
This event is ideal for landowners, conservation-minded individuals, and anyone interested in gaining a deeper understanding of forest health and stewardship practices.
Prentice Woods Preserve Spring Clean up
Volunteer with MMRG by helping us keep the Prentice Woods Preserve (Wakefield, NH) in pristine condition. Join us for a few hours of light work. The Preserve is valuable wetland habitat and will really benefit from your help!
