Woods, Water & Wildlife Explorers Club- Backyard Treasure Hunt!
Today I had some time to spend with just my oldest child, a rarity for the last 6 years since his younger sibling came along. It’s always special when I can spend time alone with him, but now that he’s older, we can do so much more than when he was little. We decided to spend our time together doing the MMRG's WWW Explorers Club Backyard Treasure Hunt.Right away, we were able to find round rocks, straight things, and branches that looked like letters. The real surprise was when we were looking for something red- we found what I’m pretty sure are the last 2 ripe Alpine Strawberries in our yard. Red + seeds + it even had leaves that had been chewed by a bug. Triple score! It was a muggy day, and quite overcast too, but we managed to see one little cloud that was lower than the rest and darker too. It had ears sticking up, a little round tail, and strong short legs underneath- a perfect little bunny. We stopped to listen to the sounds around us, which are often drowned by the traffic on our street. Between each car that went by, though, the birds did not stop talking. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but this seems to be a really awesome year for birds. We both listened for a while as these cheery notes floated past us- a moment in time to cherish our togetherness. As we found our last few things on the list, we seemed to melt into nature- walking barefoot, being quiet, and drinking in the smells, sights, sounds, textures- and even tastes. I’m so glad that I’ve had this chance to enjoy nature with my son!I hope you’ll join us in doing some of these Explorers Club activities!
