MMRG partners with MCC and Scott Weidensaul for a successful Hawk Watch

Saturday, September 20th— As mid-morning rolled around, representatives of the Milton NH Conservation Commission (MCC) and MMRG gathered with participants on Teneriffe Mountain, hoping to witness a show. With clear skies and just enough northerly wind, everyone was able to enjoy the impressive sights of a variety of hawks and other raptors flying overhead. Thanks to the knowledgeable Scott Weidensaul— renowned ornithologist and award-winning author—guests were able to ask questions and learn about these impressive birds in real time.

MMRG Board Chair, Peter Goodwin, was in attendance and provided this recap:

“A good time was had by all. A few warblers went by, and a Blue Jay or two, and then the sun started making thermals. First, there were Turkey Vultures, and then hawks. Saw upwards of 30 of them: Red-Tailed Hawks, Red-Shouldered Hawks, Broad-Winged Hawks, and a couple of Osprey, with a Goshawk thrown in. Some started low in the thermals and then soared right out of sight. A few dove down over the hillside. Scott Weidensaul helped to identify all the birds and is a great teacher of how to identify hawks.”

A heartfelt thanks to Scott Weidensaul for generously sharing his expertise and guiding everyone through the art of hawk identification. We’re also deeply appreciative of our partners at the Milton Conservation Commission for their role in making this event happen. And to everyone who came out to experience the wonder—thank you for being part of the day!
